According to a recent publication, though, that title belongs to a mechanised timber mill invented by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be produced in less than seven days.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, which turned timber to planks with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could build vessels faster compared to anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Netherlands maritime, economic as well as artistic supremacy across Europe and the world.
