Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
