Defense Department Report Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing secret information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Response

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public later this week.
