Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
