Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for New York City in Maiden Speech
On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
